TUESDAY, FEB. 24 -- Sprig Trip: Four Wins and Busch Gardens
The first weekend of baseball is behind us and we could not have asked for a better start! We played four games against solid competition and we were able to come out on top in every contest! We were able to win in many different ways and we were put in situations that can only help us further down the road. Kenny Fellows and Jake McLouth both had game-winning hits, and congrats to Jake for his first college at bat being a home run! In both of those games, we were down by three runs and we were able to stay together and focused and chip away at the lead until we came out on top.
Against Cincinnati and St. John's, we jumped out to a lead and we were able to maintain it throughout the game, never surrendering it, or letting the team tie the game back up. Winning games both of these ways show that we are a cohesive team that fights and scraps every inning, out, and pitch! I have never seen a team at Michigan with such great chemistry and players having so much fun on the field. It has been fun to be a part of so far and hopefully we can continue this style of play.
This was the first starts for many of the guys on the team, and although we did not get leads to the point where we could play everyone on the bench, we put new inexperienced players in pressure situations, and they were able to succeed, which will definitely bring confidence as the season progresses.
Currently, we are on the bus to Jacksonville, Florida where we will play another five games this week. We play Wednesday night against North Florida, then play in the Jacksonville Invitational this weekend against Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Jacksonville, and Akron. We will certainly be tested again, and it is exciting to play teams from all over the country to get a sense of where we stand.
Yesterday on our day off, we had the opportunity to visit Busch Gardens! Most of the guys I talked to had a great time on the rides and seeing the different wildlife the park has to offer. There was one failure during the day, however, when a team of baseball players could not get one ring on a bottle at the ring toss game. We all believe it was rigged because in total we probably threw at least a thousand of those little rings at the bottles and not one landed.
Thanks for following us on our spring trip and as always, Go Blue!
