MALIBU, Calif. -- The No. 18-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team suffered a 4-2 setback to No. 41 Washington on Friday (Feb. 27) in a neutral-site match at Pepperdine's Ralph-Straus Tennis Center. The Wolverines (6-6) swept the doubles competition but surrendered four of the five completed singles matches in just their second-ever match against the Huskies (8-3).
Teaming together for the first time in their careers, junior Mike Sroczynski (Chatham, N.J./Laurel Springs School) and sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan./Laurel Springs School) earned an 8-3 victory over Brad Bator and Tobi Obenaus at No. 3 to give U-M the early edge in doubles. Junior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory) and sophomore Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) were victorious for the second time in three days, claiming an 8-6 win over Martin Kildahl and Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan at No. 1 to clinch the first team point for the Maize and Blue.
Senior Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) and sophomore Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) made their season debut in dual-match play, outlasting Derek Drabble and Patrik Fischer by a 9-8(1) score at No. 2 to complete the doubles sweep for the Wolverines.
Michigan went in front 2-0 thanks to the steady play of Navas, who opened singles action with a solid 6-4, 6-2 victory over Bator at No. 6. Navas is undefeated in four dual matches this season.
Navas' win was unfortunately U-M's last as Washington came out on top in four straight matches to complete the comeback victory. Madden was up a break in the third set of his No. 4 match against David Chu when play was stopped.
The Wolverines return to action on Wednesday (March 4) when they face Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start at the Eck Tennis Pavilion.
