COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The fifth-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team claimed a 357.600-349.700 victory over rival Ohio State on Saturday night (March 21) at St. John Arena in U-M's final dual meet of the 2009 season. As a squad, the Wolverines earned season bests on four of six events -- floor exercise, pommel horse, vault and parallel bars -- en route to their highest overall team score of the season.
The meet's tape-delayed broadcast will air on the Big Ten Network this coming Wednesday (March 25) at 6 p.m.
Preseason All-Big Ten sophomore Chris Cameron(Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region HS) grabbed multiple event crowns for the second time this season, garnering top marks on pommel horse (15.000) and parallel bars (14.750), to claim his fourth all-around title of the year. Michigan's other preseason All-Big Ten team member, sophomore Thomas Kelley(Libertville, Ill./Libertyville), received his fifth event title of the season on floor exercise with a season-best 15.200.
In the final meet before the Wolverines host the Big Ten Championships, eight gymnasts either tied or increased 13 personal season or career highs, including senior Ralph Rosso's (Morganville, N.J./South Vianney HS) 15.750 on vault to tie a personal career-best and a U-M team season-best.
Paced by Kelley's title-winning performance, the Maize and Blue compiled a 60.000 on floor exercise, its highest mark of the 2009 campaign. Senior Scott Bregman(Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State HS) matched his season-best score with a 14.850.
The Wolverines earned a season-high 59.300 on the pommel horse -- an event on which they had recently struggled -- with junior Mel Anton Santander(Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) leading the squad with a season-best 15.600. Rosso garnered a 15.750 on the apparatus to tie his career high.
On the still rings, junior captain Phil Goldberg(Dalton, Ga./McCallie) obtained the Maize and Blue's highest score with a 15.200, while senior Joe Catrambone(Deptford, N.J./Gloucester Catholic) chipped in a season-high 14.800.
All six Michigan vault performers registered a score of 15.000 or higher on the event en route to the team's season-best mark of 62.600. Santander earned another season high with a 15.600, and Rosso tied his career high of 15.750 to keep the Wolverines ahead of the Buckeyes.
U-M struggled slightly on the parallel bars, amassing a 57.250. In addition to Cameron's mark on the apparatus, Santander collected his best score of the year with a 14.450, marking the first time this season that he had earned a score above a 14.000.
The team's 58.650 on horizontal bar marked the last team high in the competition. Season-best scores came from Catrambone and Cameron, who registered a 15.100 and 14.450, respectively, while redshirt freshman Devan Cote(Hollis, N.H./Hollis-Brookline) tallied a 14.600 to set a career high.
In two weeks (April 3-4) the Wolverines will host the Big Ten Championships at Crisler Arena in Ann Arbor. The two-day event will start at 7 p.m. each evening and will be broadcast live by the Big Ten Network. For more information regarding the event, visit the Big Ten Men's Gymnastics Championships page.
