ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 37-ranked University of Michigan men's tennis team earned a hard-fought 4-2 victory over No. 42 Northwestern in the Big Ten Tournament quarterfinals, held Friday (April 24) on the outdoor courts of the Varsity Tennis Center. The fourth-seeded Wolverines (13-13) claimed their fifth straight doubles point and wins in three of the first five singles matches completed to clinch their eighth straight victory over the fifth-seeded Wildcats (18-8) and advance to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the fifth consecutive season.
With U-M leading 3-2, sophomore Jason Jung (Torrance, Calif./West Torrance HS) stepped up and delivered a huge 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 triumph over Marc Dwyer at No. 1 singles to send the Maize and Blue to the next round. Jung earned a big break to go ahead 5-4 in the third set and then served out the match for his sixth win in his last seven tries. His victory proved to be critical, as Northwestern was within one game of wrapping up a three-set win at No. 3 when the team outcome was decided.
The Wolverines took a comfortable 3-1 advantage thanks to the steady play of sophomore Chris Madden (Lotus, Calif./Ponderosa HS) and sophomore/freshman Drew Daniel (Overland Park, Kan./Laurel Springs School). Madden posted a 6-1, 6-4 decision over Joshua Graves at No. 4 for his 10th victory in 11 tries, and Daniel cruised past Eric Spector by a score of 6-3, 6-1 at No. 6 for his team-leading 26th overall win of 2008-09.
Michigan earned its 16th doubles point of the season with victories at the top two positions. U-M's No. 51-ranked tandem of Jung and junior George Navas (Tampa, Fla./Tampa Preparatory School) handily defeated Dwyer and Alex Sanborn by an 8-3 score at No. 1, while Madden and senior Andrew Mazlin (Altamonte Springs, Fla./Lyman HS) earned a big break in the final game of their 8-6 triumph over Graves and Tobias Reitz at No. 2 to improve to a team-best 12-3 in dual-match play.
The Wolverines will meet top-seeded and third-ranked Ohio State in the semifinals tomorrow (Saturday, April 25) at 10 a.m. The Buckeyes drew a first-round bye and earned a 4-0 quarterfinal victory over No. 8 seed Wisconsin.
