CHERRY HILL, N.J. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan first varsity eight took second place in Friday afternoon's (May 29) repechage at the NCAA Championships in Cooper River. The runner-up showing was enough to boost the top Wolverine boat into Saturday morning's (May 30) semifinals.
In the opening sprint, No. 16 Southern California and No. 6 Harvard edged a few seats ahead of the second level of boats, which included Michigan, No. 9 Wisconsin and No. 15 Dartmouth. The race changed drastically during the third leg as U-M's stroke rating climbed to 38 to surge past Ohio State, then Harvard and finallySouthern Calto take over first place with 500 meters left. The Buckeyes and Women of Troy responded, however, making it a three-boat race to the finish line. Ohio State ended up hitting the finish line first in 6:21.00, with Michigan (6:21.27) about a seat back in second and USC another seat back in third (6:21.42). There was open water between the three crews advancing to the semifinals and the four shells heading to the third-level final. Michigan Head Coach Mark Rothstein
On the team's performance today... "First of all we achieved our first goal, which was to get all three boats into the semifinals and we did that today. We feel good about that. Our first varsity eight had an adventurous day, but they ended up getting the job done, so that's what matters. I thought our four raced really well this morning, as did our second varsity eight. I think we're in a good position. It's going to be a very fast semi. It's clear that each boat will have to have its best race of the year to get into the final."
On the team's mindset and level of confidence moving forward to the semifinals... "I think that we'll learn more tomorrow. We have a challenge ahead, but I think our team likes challenges, so I think they'll rise to the occasion."
