
Four Rowers with U-M Ties Headed to 2009 World Championships

ANN ARBOR, Mich.-- Four former U-M rowing student-athletes were named to Team USA's World Championship team, USRowing announced on Monday (Aug. 10). Ellen Tomek will compete in the double sculls, while Sarah Trowbridge and Stesha Carle will row in the quadruple sculls. Current assistant coach Brett Sickler will participate as an alternate.
Tomek (2004-06) is a three-time member of the senior national team and will be competing with Megan Kalmoe. The pair, which rowed together in the 2008 Summer Olympics, qualified after winning the 2009 National Selection Regatta #2 in mid-May and then winning gold in mid-July at the 2009 Rowing World Cup Regatta in Lucerne, Switzerland.
Carle (2003-06) made her debut with the USA Senior national team last summer, winning silver with Trowbridge (2003-05) in the four at the World Championships. Carle also competed with the USA Junior team and was a two-year member of the under-23 national team. Trowbridge will be making her third appearance with the senior national team. She competed in the World Championships in 2008 and won the double sculls and finished second in the quadruple sculls at the 2007 Pan American Games.
Sicker (2002-05) served as a Team USA alternate at the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing and has won two gold medals in the eight at the FISA World Championships (2006-07). She is also a world-record holder in the event.
The World Championships run from Aug. 20-23 in Pozan, Poland.
