ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Sophomore Courtney Fletcher (Duluth, Ga./Northview) posted a career-high 11 kills and was one of three Wolverines to reach double figures as the No. 8-ranked University of Michigan volleyball team picked up a three-set sweep (25-17, 25-16, 25-23) at Indiana on Friday (Sept. 15) to open Big Ten play at University Gymnasium.
Senior Juliana Paz (Porto Alegre, Brazil/Iowa Western CC) posted a match-best 12 kills, while sophomore Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph) added 10 terminations and a team-high 16 digs.
The third and deciding set was the closest of the night with the teams exchanging the lead seven times. Indiana held the lead as late as 19-18, but in the end, Hunt was too much for the host Hoosiers, contributing five kills in the set with Fletcher adding four in a 25-23 U-M win.
In set one, the Wolverines and Hoosier traded blows for most of the match before U-M used a 9-5 run midway through the frame to take a 19-15 lead. Fletcher and Paz did most of the damage with five kills apiece, while senior Veronica Rood (Temperance, Mich./Bedford) and Hunt added three each as the Michigan defense held IU to a .045 attack percentage in a 25-17 win.
Set two was all Michigan in a 25-16 victory. With the score tied at 7-7, U-M went on a 13-3 run with a pair of kills from both Paz and Fletcher and a slew of unforced IU errors contributing to the 25-16 win.
The Wolverines return to action this Sunday (Sept. 27) when they head to West Lafayette, Ind., for a 1 p.m. tilt with Purdue at Intercollegiate Athletic Facility. MGoBlue.com will provide live stats and a live blog.
