ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 3 USA Today/No. 3 USCHO) defeated the U.S. National Team Development Program Under-18 team, 3-0, in exhibition action on Tuesday (Oct. 12) at Yost Ice Arena. Senior goaltender Bryan Hogan (Highland, Mich.) turned away 33 shots, including 14 in the third period for the shutout.
Freshman forward Derek DeBlois (Narragansett, R.I.) assisted on each of the first two goals, scored by junior defenseman Brandon Burlon (Nobleton, Ontario) and senior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario). Junior forward Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) netted the insurance marker in the final period.
Michigan drew first blood at 3:10 of the first period when Burlon and DeBlois capitalized on a two-on-one opportunity. Streaking down the left-hand boards, DeBlois slid a perfect pass across the faceoff circles onto the tape of Burlon's stick. Goaltender John Gibson dove out in an attempt to cut off the cross, leaving the top shelf wide open for Burlon to roof the puck and put the Maize and Blue up, 1-0.
DeBlois added his second helper just five minutes later. Sophomore forward Jeff Rohrkemper (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) dug the puck off the boards and moved it ahead to DeBlois, who fired a shot from just inside the right faceoff circle, which deflected off the goalie into the body of Caporusso and trickled into the net for the tally.
While neither team capitalized in the second stanza, each had its fair share of chances. On a man-advantage at 9:00, senior defenseman Chad Langlais (Spokane, Wash.) took a shot from the point that evaded everyone but clinked off the far post. Team USA had a handful of point-blank shots that sailed just wide after a turnover in the Michigan zone, as well as an open-net opportunity.
Late in the third period, Michigan sealed the win on a rocket from Glendening, who blasted a bullet that ricocheted off the left post and took a U-M bounce into the net. Junior forward David Wohlberg (South Lyon, Mich.) and Caporusso notched assists on the play.
Since the creation of the U.S. National Team Development Program in 1997-98, there have been 28 alumni that have donned the Maize and Blue. Currently, nine former USA players are on the U-M roster.
The Wolverines are back in action this Saturday (Oct. 16) at 7:05 p.m., as they head to the East Coast to take on the New Hampshire Wildcats (No. 9 USA Today/No. 9 USCHO) in Durham, N.H.
