TERRE HAUTE, Ind. -- Running a combined team for the first time this season, the University of Michigan men's cross country team claimed 23rd place (595 points) in the blue race at the NCAA Pre-Nationals on Saturday (Oct. 16) at the LaVern Gibson Championship Cross Country course at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center.
Junior Bobby Aprill (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) paced the Wolverines for the first time this season -- and fourth time in his career -- with a 41st-place finish and career-best time of 24:22.3. Aprill's effort shaved eight seconds from his previous best time, which he registered two seasons ago at the Notre Dame Invitational.
Senior/junior Craig Forys (Howell, N.J./Colts Neck HS) finished several steps behind Aprill as Michigan's second runner across the line, posting a time of 24:31.9 in 58th place. A trio of underclassmen rounded out the Wolverines' scoring five; sophomore Zach Ornelas (Cedar Park, Texas/Vista Ridge HS), freshman Sean Bone (Lake Orion, Mich./Lake Orion HS) and Adam Kern (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) placed 139rd, 178th and 179th, respectively. Bone and Kern posted career days as the pair crossed the finish line just one second apart; Bone registered a time of 25:48.2 to trim 29 from his previous personal best, while Kern shaved 26 seconds from his best with a time of 25:49.1. Ornelas recorded a time of 25:19.3, missing his personal best by just eight seconds.
The Wolverines will wrap up the regular-season portion of their 2010 schedule at the annual EMU Fall Classic on Saturday (Oct. 23) in Dexter, Mich. The 8,000-meter race is slated for a 10 a.m. start at Hudson Mills Metropark.
