Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On tonight's game ... "You shouldn't lose or tie a game when you have a 4-1 lead in the third period at home. With or without Carl Hagelin, it was a disappointing third period. Even though I thought the first couple of shifts we carried the play, and Caporusso might have had the puck, for a minute or a minute and a half in the offensive zone, we couldn't burry it. And then once they got a goal, they got some life and they took advantage. They were very opportunistic and it cost us the win."
On the loss of Carl Hagelin ... "It can [hurt us], but our team should still pick up the slack. We still had a 4-1 lead going into the third period. I think the penalties might have taken a toll on our players. We had a chance to win, but we gave up too much. You can't expect to win games when you give up four goals. It starts with your goalie, your defense, your penalty killers, your forwards, and your back-checking forwards. We made a lot of mistakes tonight. You're going to make some mistakes in a game when it's early on in the game. But you just don't want them to come back and bite you like tonight."
On senior goalie Shawn Hunwick ... "I thought he played well. He made some good saves, quick saves. We would turn the puck over and bang a quick shot and then he would make a good save. I thought he played well. He got victimized in the third period just like our team did. I can't tell you any of the goals were bad goals. They had some pretty good chances and they put them in."
U-M Junior Forward Luke Glendening
On the penalties ... "They were unnecessary, most of them. I guess that is the way it is sometimes. We definitely have to work on our discipline."
On the penalty kills ... "We had a lot of veterans out there and a lot of guys with experience, but we still have to work on it, especially if we're going to be taking a lot of penalties."
U-M Senior Forward Matt Rust
On Carl Hagelin's game misconduct ... "For Carl to take that sort of penalty is like, you've got to be kidding me, because it's Carl. He doesn't normally take penalties, especially hitting from behind. We have four captains for a reason. We're a tight knit captain crew. Obviously, it hurts for his linemates. It hurt me and [Kevin] Lynch. It jumbles the lines around and kind of screws up the flow a little bit. You've got guys that may be a little confused out there because it is different playing with different linemates. The chemistry gets all jumbled. I think we did well for the most part until we choked."
On Mercyhurst's comeback ... "Especially early on in the season I think we got too content with where we were. Maybe in the dressing room we were a little too loose and that carried onto the ice. The sign of a good team is not to let a waterfall effect happen. When they got that first goal, the flood gates just opened. It was a stupid play that we wouldn't normally make; mental errors, a bad puck going off the referee's skate. Obviously, we're going to see some tape on that tomorrow."
