ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team picked up its ninth win of the season by defeating Iowa, 2-1, on Friday evening (Oct. 29) at the U-M Soccer Stadium.
Freshman Meghan Toohey's (Philadelphia, Pa./Phil-Mont Christian) first career goal proved to be the game-winning goal. Junior/sophomore Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) made five stops en route to the victory.
After outshooting the Hawkeyes, 13-3, in a scoreless first half, Michigan broke through two minutes into the second half on junior/sophomore Clare Stachel's (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central) third goal of the season. Senior Amanda Bowery (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester) launched a free kick from midfield into the box, where junior Meaghan Hennessy (Westlake, Ohio/Magnificat) ushered the ball to Stachel near the right post. Stachel drilled the ball into the twine to give the Wolverines a 1-0 lead.
Midway through the second frame, Toohey extended U-M's lead to 2-0 as she corralled her own rebound from 15 yards out and flipped a shot into the right corner. Iowa cut the lead in half at 76:53 on a howler from 25 yards out, but the Wolverine defense locked down for the remaining time to secure the victory.
Michigan will try to reach the 10-win plateau for the first time since 2004, hosting Illinois on Sunday (Oct. 31) at the U-M Soccer Stadium. U-M will honor its five seniors prior to the 3 p.m. kickoff. The game will also be aired live on the Big Ten Network.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Greg Ryan
On the win ... "Well, we put two in the goal. You know, after two, I didn't think they would score. I thought we were playing really well and then the girl had a good shot. But it's one Haley makes 99 out of 100 times. It made the rest of the game just chaotic. It put us under a lot of pressure. As far as what we did well, we got in behind them a lot today. In the second half, we got our chances inside the box. In the first half, all of our chances were outside of the box. Then, we got our chances inside. Little Meghan Toohey's been tremendous this year and she finally got one right in the top corner. She's been a gamer for us all year long."
