BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 12-ranked Michigan field hockey team used a hat trick from senior Zara Saydjari (Skowhegan, Maine/Skowhegan Area) and four points from classmate Alicia Mayer (Selinsgrove, Pa./Selinsgrove) to defeat Indiana, 5-2, in the regular-season finale on Saturday (Oct. 30) at the IU Field Hockey Field. With the win, Michigan earns a share of the program's seventh Big Ten regular-season title after finishing with a 5-1 conference slate.

Zara Saydjari
Mayer got the Wolverines offense going in the 10th minute of action. She scored unassisted from the left post to give U-M a 1-0 lead. Saydjari then connected on the first of her three goals at 27:14 off a Mayer pass from the right side of the circle. Almost seven minutes later, Saydjari scored her second goal on another pass from Mayer, making it 3-0 going into the halftime break. Michigan had 11 shots in the first half and Indiana stopped two shots from senior Meredith Way (Lititz, Pa./Warwick) with defensive saves.
A flurry of goals to begin the second half was started by Saydjari at 43:40 as she scored on a fast break up the field. Indiana then put in back-to-back goals 1:18 apart as Brenna Molejadi and Mariella Grote brought the Hoosiers back to within two goals. However, Mayer added insurance at 61:10 on a deflection off a penalty corner from Way.
Michigan now is the No. 2 seed in the upcoming Big Ten Tournament, to be held on the campus of Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. The Wolverines will face seventh-seeded Iowa on Thursday (Nov. 4) at 12:15 CDT to open postseason play.

NOTES
• The Wolverines have now won seven Big Ten regular-season titles. They won outright titles in 2000, 2002 and 2007 and shared crowns in 1997, 2003, 2004 and 2010.
• Michigan's win and Ohio State's 3-0 win at Iowa on Saturday (Oct. 30) meant the Wolverines and Buckeyes shared the crown. Ohio State earns the top seed in the Big Ten Tournament due to its 2-1 win over the Maize and Blue on Oct. 22.
• Saydjari picks up her first career hat trick in the win over Indiana. She had two goals in Michigan's 2-1 win over Michigan State on Oct. 1, 2010, and also had a pair of tallies against Miami on Oct. 31, 2008.
• Saydjari sets a career high with six goals in a season. She had five in her sophomore season in 2008.
• Alicia Mayer also sets a career high with nine goals in a season. She had seven in the 2009 campaign.
• Michigan snapped a two-game losing streak to Indiana with today's win.
• Michigan will now face Iowa in the Big Ten Tournament for the second straight season. The Wolverines fell to the Hawkeyes, 5-3, in last year's opening round.
