Relays, Feeley Highlight Strong Showing at USA Minnesota Grand Prix

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team put 11 swimmers in 'A' finals, earned two relay crowns and one individual victory at the USA Swimming Minnesota Grand Prix this weekend (Fri-Sun., Nov. 12-14) at Minnesota's University Aquatic Center.
Sophomore Ryan Feeley (Rye, N.Y./Rye) dominated the distance races as the fastest collegiate swimmer in the 500-yard freestyle (4:26.87), finishing fourth overall, and the 1,650-yard freestyle (15:26.87), earning a fifth-place finish.
The 800-yard freestyle relay team of junior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson), senior Neal Kennedy (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) and freshmen Michael Wynalda (Wyoming, Mich./Grandville) and freshman Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton) posted the first of Michigan's two relay wins, swimming at a 6:39.27 pace on Saturday night (Nov. 13). The Wolverines capped the weekend with two-three in the 400-yard medley relay. The quartet of junior Jan Konarzewski (Warsaw, Poland/LO im Andersa), senior James Ridgeway (Chicago, Ill./Saint Patrick), Madwed and sophomore Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) scored the second-place finish with a time of 3:21.28, followed closely by U-M's 'B' relay.
In addition to their relay success, Kennedy, Madwed and Whitaker each had individual triumphs. Kennedy, making his season debut, finished seventh in the 100-yard breaststroke (56.19) and led off Michigan's runner-up 400-yard freestyle relay. Madwed, who anchored the 400-yard freestyle relay, touched the wall fifth in the 200-yard butterfly (1:48.56) and 10th in the 100-yard butterfly (49.22). Whitaker zoomed to a sixth-place finish in the 400-yard individual medley (3:56.91).
The trio of Kennedy, Madwed and Whitaker also had a strong showing in the 200-yard individual medley, finishing fifth through seventh, respectively. Kennedy was the first Wolverine to the wall in fifth (1:50.36), followed by Madwed (1:52.44) and Whitaker (1:52.61).
Konarzewski and sophomore Connor McCarroll (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) finished sixth (1:49.99) and seventh (1:50.91), respectively, in the 200-yard backstroke. Seniors Jared Miller (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East), Ridgeway and Ortiz also turned in individual top-10 finishes. Senior Sam Wensman (Durham, N.H./Oyster River) earned a spot in the 200-yard breaststroke but was disqualified during the finals.
Former Wolverines Alon Mandel (2007-10) and Bobby Savulich (2006-09), swimming under the banner of Club Wolverine, combined for five top-four finishes, including a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly for Mandel and a runner-up finish in the 50-yard freestyle for Savulich.
The Maize and Blue divers will travel with the Michigan women's swimming and diving team to the Purdue Invitational (Fri-Sun., Nov. 19-21) in West Lafayette, Ind. The swimmers will be back in the water at the USA Swimming Short Course Nationals, Dec. 2-5, in Columbus, Ohio.
