DETROIT, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 10 USA Today/No. 11 USCHO) survived a third-period flurry by the Michigan Tech Huskies to win 4-2 on Wednesday (Dec. 29) in the semifinals of the Great Lakes Invitational held at Joe Louis Arena. U-M's first three goals were scored by the sophomore class. Left wing Lindsay Sparks (Oakville, Ontario) and center Jeff Rohrkemper (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), who were playing in their seventh and third games of the season, respectively, each tallied his first goal of the season. Center A.J. Treais (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) scored the game-winner.
Michigan had the only goal through the first 45 minutes of the game, but both offenses broke out partway through the third period. Four goals were scored over a 4:06 span as the Huskies and Wolverines matched each other goal for goal.
Michigan consistently peppered MTU goalie Josh Robinson with 49 total shots. U-M senior goalie Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) blanked MTU on 13 shots through 40 minutes but faced 17 shots in the third period, during which he allowed two goals.
U-M kicked off the scoring at 12:28 of the second period, two seconds after a power play ended, to take a 1-0 lead. Freshman left wing Luke Moffatt (Paradise Valley, Ariz.) backhanded a shot from an impossible angle a few feet to the left of the goal. The shot ricocheted off the left post, behind Robinson and out into the slot, where Sparks had a near empty net at which to shoot.
The third-period scoring barrage commenced at 6:55. MTU's Milos Gordic knocked home a fourth rebound chance to tie the game at 1-1. Rohrkemper scored after a great rush and pass from junior defenseman Brandon Burlon (Nobleton, Ontario) at 7:37 to make it 2-1 Michigan. The Huskies bounced back with a power-play goal by Ryan Furne at 9:33. U-M regained the lead for good at 11:01 when Treais flicked a loose puck into the Husky net from between the circles.
Junior right wing Luke Glendening (Grand Rapids, Mich.) sealed the win with an empty-net goal at 19:13.
The Wolverines will meet Colorado College (receiving votes USA Today/No. 20 USCHO) in the GLI championship game on Thursday night (Dec. 30) at Joe Louis Arena. Faceoff is at 7:35 p.m. and FS Detroit will televise the game live. CC knocked off Michigan State, 5-4, in the other GLI semifinal.
