Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the struggling power play... "You just about don't want to get a power play in the first couple minutes of the game. You hardly get your legs under you. That's not an excuse but that's what you saw. Our power play struggled and I think we had three early power plays. We got five shots but I don't think we had five chances. As the game wore on I thought we got better. They did a good job cleaning up loose pucks. We missed the net on shots and we just weren't sharp on the power play."
On the second period... "You would like to get rewarded when you're playing well and getting good chances. It gets the momentum going. Northern Michigan played a good defensive, road-style of hockey and we had to earn everything and every inch out there. We definitely have to earn our chances. I thought we had a lot of pucks blocked by them that got back to our defense and didn't get through. Our forwards were not able to jump on loose pucks. We have to give credit to their goalie."
On playing well enough to win... "I don't think we had a lot of quality chances. But when you look at their two goals, they weren't scoring chances either. One goal was a weak shot deflected and another was a bad angle shot that got into the net. You have to score ugly goals when you aren't getting great chances. When we get 35 shots we have to find a way to score more than one goal."
U-M Junior Left Wing Carl Hagelin
On why the power play did not work... "If I had an explanation I would be able to tell the team. Maybe we're too cute with the puck and not working hard enough at getting shots through. We're not lucky around the net and we're not working hard enough to get lucky."
On being worried after NMU's first goal... "No. I think we have been better at that lately. After Christmas we've been better at coming back after the other team has been ahead. I don't think we were too down on ourselves after they got their first goal. Their second goal made us start working harder. It was good for us. We couldn't come back because we didn't score enough goals."
On playing NMU at Yost again tomorrow... "We can't get swept at home. We take a lot of pride in playing at Yost and we just won't think too much about this game. We'll leave it behind and come back tomorrow and prove to ourselves, the guys in the locker room, that we're a good team and we should get three points out of six."
