Notre Dame Series Notes
Michigan moves to 69-46-5 all-time against Notre Dame and 39-21-3 at home against the Fighting Irish. The Wolverines won both home games against Notre Dame this season.
This is just the sixth time the Wolverines have shut out the Fighting Irish in their 119-game series history dating back to February 4, 1923.
Matt Rust had a goal and an assist tonight, giving him 4-3-7 totals in nine career games against Notre Dame.
In his 12th career game against Notre Dame, senior captain Chris Summers scored his first goal. He also contributed an assist today for a career line of 1-5-6.
Head coach Red Berenson is 46-13-3 against the Fighting Irish, including a record of 7-7-0 since Jeff Jackson became the Notre Dame head coach.
Team Notables
Michigan notched its 10th home win of the season (10-5-1) with tonight's victory. Since late November, U-M is 9-1-1 at Yost Ice Arena.
Tonight's shutout was the fifth of the season for the Maize and Blue, tying last season's mark.
U-M was perfect on the penalty kill (5-for-5). This is the 18th time this season U-M penalty killers, currently ranked sixth in the nation, have blanked their opponents. U-M is 13-5-0 in those games.
U-M improves its record to 14-0-0 when leading after the first period this season. It is 16-3-0 when scoring first.
Michigan's power play contributed a goal and was 1-for-4 on the night, operating at 18.9 percent for the season. The Wolverines are 16-7-1 when the power play scores at least one goal.
The Wolverines earned their fourth shorthanded goal of the season on Matt Rust's first-period tally. Rust has two shorthanded goals this season. U-M is 4-0-0 with a shorthanded goal.
Individual Notables
Defenseman Chad Langlais scored his fourth goal of the season, which puts him first among U-M blueliners in goals. Langlais later added an assist for his second multi-point game of the season and ninth of his career.
Paired with his goal last Saturday (Feb. 20) against Northern Michigan, Langlais has a marker in consecutive games for the first time in his career.
Matt Rust finished with a goal and assist for his eighth multi-point game of the season. He has two of the four short-handed goals by the Wolverines this campaign. Rust has points in each of the past three games (1-2-3) and 10 points (3-7-10) in the last 10 outings.
Carl Hagelin increased his career-best point streak to 10 games (2-9-11) with his short-handed assist in the first period. Hagelin leads U-M in goals, assists and points this season (14-24-38).
Shawn Hunwick recorded his first career win after coming in to relieve an injured Bryan Hogan with 9:11 remaining in the first period. This is just the third game Hunwick has seen ice time while at U-M. He stopped all 14 shots he faced and earned the game's first-star honor.
Chris Summers had a goal and an assist for his third multi-point game this season, tying his single-season high that he set in 2008-09.
Brian Lebler registered a goal and an assist for his third multi-point game of 2009-10.
