With the loss, Michigan finishes the regular season with a 14-16 record (7-11 in Big Ten). The Wolverines have lost 8-of-10 to their in-state rivals.
Michigan is now 91-74 (*84-70) all-time against Michigan State (34-46 in East Lansing).
Michigan entered the game averaging only 9.9 turnovers per game (fourth-best mark in the country). The Wolverines had 19 on Sunday against Michigan State.
Senior Zack Gibson came off the bench to score 10 points, one shy of his career high (11), which he set in the season-opening win against Northern Michigan on Nov. 14. Gibson was 6-of-7 from the free-throw line against Michigan State. He was the only Wolverine that recorded double-figure points.
This season, senior DeShawn Sims (18.2) and junior Manny Harris (17.1) have accounted for 54 percent of U-M's scoring output this season (team averaging 65.0 ppg). Against Michigan State, the "Detroit Duo" accounted for 13 points (Sims, 9; Harris, 4).
Michigan shot 50 percent from the field in the second half (10-of-20) after shooting just 21 percent (5-of-23) from the field in the first half. It finished the game shooting 34 percent (15-of-43).
The Wolverines shot 70 percent from the free-throw line (14-of-20).
Michigan scored 19 points off 17 Michigan State turnovers.
Michigan collected a season-high 13 steals.
Michigan scored 34 points in the second half after scoring just 14 in the first.
The Big Ten Conference Tournament begins on Thursday (March 11). Michigan will be the No. 8 seed and play No. 9 Iowa. It will be the third year in a row the two teams will face each other in the tournament's opening round. Last season, Michigan was the No. 7 seed (Iowa was No. 10), and Michigan won 73-45 (March 12). In 2008, Michigan was the No. 9 seed and Iowa was the No. 8, and Michigan won 55-47 (March 13). Michigan swept the season series against Iowa this season, winning 60-46 in Ann Arbor on Jan. 30 and 80-78 in overtime on Feb. 16 in Iowa City, Iowa.
