WEST POINT, N.Y. -- Senior Ryan McCarthy (Zionsville, Ind./Zionsville) led the recently crowned NCAA champion University of Michigan men's gymnastics team to a 1-2-3 sweep of the high bar with a 14.750 at the NCAA Event Finals on Saturday (April 17) inside Army's Christl Arena. The win is Michigan first individual event champion since Andrew DiGiore took the vault title in 2003.
McCarthy took to the event last up with Michigan already guaranteed its third national title and just barely edged out junior Ian Makowske (Redding, Conn./Joel Barlow), who posted a 14.650. Senior Mel Anton Santander (Southborough, Mass./Algonquin Regional) completed the sweep, earning All-America honors with a third-place score of 14.475.
Seniors Kent Caldwell (Charlotte, N.C./Charlotte Latin), Phillip Goldberg (Dalton, Ga./McCallie) and juniors Chris Cameron (Winter Haven, Fla./Lake Region) and Thomas Kelley (Libertyville, Ill./Libertyville) earned All-America honors with their top-eight finishes. With seven individuals receiving All-America honors, Michigan set a new program record, topping its previous best with five individuals, most recently achieved at last year's championships.
On the floor exercise, Caldwell soared through the air and landed with no movement on nearly every pass. His efforts were rewarded with a 15.275, good enough for seventh place and the first All-America honor of his career. Cameron and Kelley also competed on the floor, recording scores of 15.050 and 13.650 to finish ninth and 10th, respectively.
Cameron was U-M's lone competitor on the pommel horse, but a fall from the event cost him 1.000, leaving him with only a 13.650 and ninth place.
On the still rings, Goldberg earned his third consecutive All-America honor on the event with a 14.875, while Cameron was nearly flawless, recording a 15.100 for fourth place.
Caldwell took home his second All-America honor of the evening on the vault, nearly sticking his one and a half twisting vault for a 15.825. Caldwell finished sixth place to close out his career as a Wolverine.
All four Michigan competitors on the parallel bars finished in the top eight, with Santander leading the way, posting a 15.050, just five-hundredths away from the title. Kelley received a 14.800 for fifth place, while McCarthy and Cameron tied for seventh place with matching 14.500s.
Though the NCAA championships mark the end of the season for the team, two Wolverines, freshman Rohan Sebastian (Oklahoma City, Okla./Bishop McGuinness Catholic) and Cameron, will be in action overseas. Sebastian will travel to Birmingham, England, directly from West Point to represent Ireland in the European Championships, which run April 21-25. Cameron will represent the U.S. senior team at the Pacific Rim Championships in Melbourne, Australia, April 28-May 2.
