DALLAS, Texas -- Former University of Michigan record-setting punter Zoltan Mesko (Twinsburg, Ohio/Twinsburg HS) was named a 2010 member of the National Football Foundation Hampshire Honor Society. He is the first Wolverine to receive selection to the prestigious club in the four years that the honor has been awarded by the NFF and College Football Hall of Fame.
The award is presented to collegiate football players that achieve a cumulative grade-point average of 3.2 or better, meet all NCAA requirements toward degree progress and are a starter or significant contributor on their football team.
Mesko collected many academic honors during his five years in Ann Arbor. He was named to the 2009 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-America first team and was a four-time Academic All-Big Ten selection and a five-time U-M Athletic Academic Achievement recipient.
Mesko was also a 2009 second-team All-American from nearly every major organization. He led the Big Ten and finished eighth nationally in punting with a U-M season-record 44.5-yard average as a senior.
An All-Big Ten first team member his final two seasons (2008-09), Mesko became the first Wolverine ever named to the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team. He was a finalist for the Lowe's Senior CLASS Award and Danny Wuerffel Trophy in 2009. Mesko completed his career as Michigan's all-time leader in career punts (252) and yardage (10,703), and ranks second with a 42.5-yard career average.
He graduated with a master's degree in sports management this spring. Mesko received his bachelor's degree in spring 2009 from the Ross School of Business, majoring in marketing and finance.
Mesko was a fifth-round draft pick of the New England Patriots in the 2010 NFL Draft. He was 150th overall pick of the draft and the first of three punters chosen.
