ATHENS, Ga. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis doubles pair of juniors Whitney Taney (Edina, Minn./Edina) and Rika Tatsuno (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif./Palos Verdes Peninsula) dropped a 6-3, 6-4 decision to the No. 5 pair of Marrit Boonstra and Allie Will of Florida in the first round of the NCAA Doubles Championships on Wednesday (May 27) at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
The teams stayed on serve in the first set until the Florida duo broke Taney and Tatsuno to take a 4-3 lead. Boonsta and Will won the next two games, clinching the first set, 6-3.
After being broken early in the second set, Taney and Tatsuno regrouped to break Florida and tie the set at 3-3. Boonstra and Will then took three of the next four games to win the match with a 6-4 second-set triumph.
Taney and Tatsuno, ranked No. 19, concluded the season with a 30-7 overall record and a 24-3 dual-match mark.
With Taney and Tatsuno's loss, Michigan's season is now finished. The Wolverines completed the 2010 campaign with a 24-5 overall record, winning the Big Ten championship with a 10-0 conference record. U-M had NCAA singles and doubles qualifiers for the first time since 2004 as junior Denise Muresan (Lincolnshire, Ill./Adlai E. Stevenson) competed in the singles competition yesterday (Wednesday, May 26).
