PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Former University of Michigan ice hockey forward John Madden (1994-97) and the Chicago Blackhawks beat the Philadelphia Flyers, 4-3, in overtime on Wednesday night (June 9) to win the National Hockey League's coveted Stanley Cup in the sixth game of the finals at the Wachovia Center.
Madden becomes the third former Wolverine to win the Stanley Cup for a third time. He had his name etched on the trophy while playing for the New Jersey Devils in 1999-2000 and 2002-03. He also reached the finals in 2000-01.
Signed by the Blackhawks last summer for his leadership and defensive acumen, NHL.com released a feature on Madden's impact on the team shortly after Patrick Kane scored the Stanley Cup winning goal. Madden had one goal and one assist in 22 playoff games this season.
The other two Wolverines to earn the Stanley Cup on three occasions are Pat Hughes (U-M 1974-76), who won it once with the Montreal Canadiens in 1979 and twice with the Edmonton Oilers in 1984 and 1985, and Aaron Ward (U-M 1991-93), who won back-to-back Stanley Cups with the Detroit Red Wings in 1996-97 and 1997-98 and once more with the Carolina Hurricanes in 2005-06.
Signed by the New Jersey Devils as an undrafted free agent in 1997, Madden played 10 seasons in New Jersey before signing with Chicago in 2009.
Madden was a member of U-M's 1996 national championship team. He ranks 19th on the all-time career scoring list at Michigan with 180 points (80-100-180). His most outstanding individual achievements at U-M, however, are his NCAA records for most shorthanded goals in a season (10 in 1995-96) and most shorthanded goals in a career (23).
