2010-11 Michigan Men's Golf Schedule
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Following a third straight NCAA Regional trip, one team title and six top-five finishes a season ago, University of Michigan men's golf coach Andrew Sapp released today (Wednesday, June 30) the Wolverines' 2010-11 tournament schedule.
"Each year we try to improve upon our schedule to make sure we continue to face the top competition across the country, as well as challenge ourselves by playing some of the top courses in the nation," said Sapp. "This year we have added a lot, but still maintain a few tournaments close to home to keep that balance of competition.
"For the fall we added Duke's event, which always has a challenging field, as well as East Tennessee State's event at the Ridges, which is a wonderful golf course. In the spring, we begin our spring break trip heading to Southern California's tournament. Last year, the Pac-10 was arguably the top conference in all of collegiate golf so to have a chance to face some of those schools early in the spring is going to a great opportunity for us. Also in the spring, we are going to LSU's home event. This should be strong field and gives us a chance to play a challenging course in the deep south.
"So, overall we are looking forward to this year's schedule. We had the top rated schedule among all Big Ten schools last year and we want to make sure we keep that up."
U-M will compete in 11 regular season tournaments -- five fall events and six in the spring season -- followed with the postseason beginning in West Lafayette, Ind., for the 2011 Big Ten Championships at Purdue's Kampen Golf Course, April 29-May 1. Six of U-M's 11 slated events are return visits from a season ago.
For the fifth straight year, U-M will head to the Wolf Run Country Club for the Wolf Run Intercollegiate, Sept. 11-12, in Zionsville, Ind., before heading to Glenview, Ill., for Northwestern's Windon Memorial Classic at the North Shore Country Club, Sept. 26-27. With no home event scheduled in the fall, the Wolverines have added Duke's Rod Myers Invitational played at the Duke Golf Course, Oct. 10-11.
Additionally in the fall, U-M heads to Johnsonville, Tenn., for the first time since 2002, for East Tennessee State's the Ridges Intercollegiate, Oct. 15-17, at the Ridges Golf and Country Club. The fall closes with a return trip to UNC Greensboro's Bridgestone Intercollegiate, Oct. 23-24, at Forest Oaks Country Club.
After a three-month break from competition, the Wolverines return for the 2011 spring season, opening with the third annual Big Ten Match Play Championship in Coral Springs, Fla., Feb. 11-12, at the TPC of Heron Bay. Following the conference's match play event, U-M will head to the Puerto Rico Classic, Feb. 20-22, at the Rio Mar Country Club's River Course.
U-M's annual spring break trip to California will have a twist this season, as U-M will begin the trip playing in USC's Collegiate Invitational, Feb. 28-March 1, at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif., and closes six days later with a return trip to Fresno State's Lexus Classic, March 7-8. FSU's event will be held at the San Joaquin Country Club in Fresno, Calif., and feature a non-traditional six-count-five scoring format.
U-M will begin April with a trip to the LSU Intercollegiate event, April 2-3, at the Tiger's home golf course in Baton Rouge, La., before closing out the regular season with Indiana's adidas Hoosier Invitational, April 9-10, at the IU Golf Course in Bloomington, Ind. The Wolverines postseason will begin with the Big Ten Championships, April 29-May 1, in West Lafayette, Ind., at Purdue's Kampen Golf Course. The 11 conference teams will battle for the automatic bid for the NCAA regional.
The NCAA postseason will continue with its new format after successful two-year run. After expanding the NCAA regional field to six sites, being played May 19-21, the top five teams and top individual from a non-qualifying team will advance to the NCAA Finals played at the Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Okla., May 31-June 6. Like the past two NCAA postseasons, at the end of the 54 holes of the NCAA Finals, an individual champion will be crowned and only the top eight teams will advance to a match-play playoff to determine the 2011 team national champion.
The listing of 2011 NCAA Regional sites include: Zionsville, Ind. (Wolf Run Golf Club, Indiana host); Blacksburg, Va (Pete Dye River Course, Virginia Tech host); Ocala, Fla. (Golden Ocala Golf Club, Florida host); Erie, Colo. (Colorado National Golf Club, Colorado host); Tucson, Ariz. (Omni Tucson National Resort, Arizona) and Rancho Santé Fe, Calif. (Farms Golf Course, San Diego host).
