ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team battled West Virginia to a 0-0 tie in exhibition action on Saturday (Aug. 21) at the U-M Soccer Complex. It was the first preseason game for both teams.

Chase Tennant
Seniors Alex Wood (Northville, Mich./Northville) and Matt Schmitt (Muskegon, Mich./Reeths-Puffer) each posted two shots on goal, while sophomore/freshman Noble Sullivan (Grand Rapids, Mich./Catholic Central) put another shot on target for the Wolverines.
U-M showed a strong offense early in the game and was able to string together several nice scoring opportunities in the first half, including two back-to-back rips from Schmitt within the five-yard box. The Mountaineers also showed some offense with several nice chances, including a hard hit ball that U-M goalkeeper senior/junior Chris Blais (Seattle, Wash./Kennedy Memorial) blocked to preserve the tie midway through the second half.
Michigan and West Virginia traded scoring opportunities into the final half, with both teams earning several chances to take the lead, but neither could capitalize. West Virginia had an edge in shots, 15-12, while U-M's goalkeepers Blais and junior/sophomore Tim Bergsma (Southfield, Mich./Southfield Christian) split time in goal. Blais led the way with three saves, while Bergsma added two in the second frame.
The Wolverines have one more friendly scheduled, traveling to Fort Wayne, Ind., to take on Evansville on Saturday (Aug. 28) at the ShingigZ National Soccer Tournament, which will feature all the Big Ten men's soccer teams.
