OOSTENDE, Belgium -- The University of Michigan men's basketball team dropped its third game of its European Tour today (Wednesday, Aug. 25) in a 70-55 setback against Oostende -- the runner-up in the Division I Belgian League -- at Sleuyter Arena.
The Maize and Blue was led by junior Stu Douglass' (Carmel, Ind./Carmel) 15 points, producing a majority of his points from long range (4-for-9) while adding four rebounds and two assists. Redshirt freshman Jordan Morgan (Detroit, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) had nine points after going 4-for-4 from the field, while freshman Tim Hardaway, Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior) had eight points and three rebounds.
Getting out of the gates early, the Wolverines played Oostende even in the first quarter and Douglass closed the first 10 minutes with seven of the Wolverines' 18 points. However, foul shooting and inside buckets allowed Oostende to battle back and tie the game, 18-18.
Oostende opened the second quarter with an 18-2 run and the Wolverines were unable to counterattack offensively with cold shooting, as the experienced and bigger Belgian professional team used its inside game to score 24 points in the paint in the first half to pull away from the Wolverines, 46-28.
At the start of the third quarter, Michigan used a mixture of man-to-man and zone to cut into the deficit. A pair of long-range buckets from Douglass and sophomore Matt Vogrich (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) aided the Maize and Blue charge, but second-chance points off 21 offensive boards continued to hurt the Wolverines' chances of a comeback.
Oostende finished the game outrebounding the Wolverines 57-27.
For the final contest of their European tour, the Wolverines will face Belgian professional team Mons -- Administrative Specialist Travis Conlan's former team -- Thursday (Aug. 26) at 7 p.m. CET (1 p.m. EDT) at the Tournai Gymnasium before spending their final day touring Amsterdam.
