ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan baseball team belted six home runs and seven different Wolverine pitchers combined to give up just one run in a 24-1 exhibition win over the Ontario Blue Jays on Wednesday afternoon (Sept. 22) at the Wilpon Baseball Complex, home of Ray Fisher Stadium. The 14-inning exhibition was against a high-level summer baseball program based in Ontario, Canada.
The Wolverines plated a run in the second as redshirt sophomore Kevin Krantz (Traverse City, Mich./Central) hit a home run over the wall in left-center. U-M then put up a six-spot in the fourth as redshirt sophomore Tyler Mills (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant) doubled and scored on a single by freshman Alex Lakatos (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central). With the bases loaded, junior John Lorenz (Frankfort, Ill./Lincoln-Way East) reached on an error to score Mills. Junior Coley Crank (Pinole, Calif./Pinole Valley) walked and redshirt junior Garrett Stephens (Davison, Mich./Davison) unloaded the bases with a double to the gap in left.
The Blue Jays made it 7-1 in the sixth on a sacrifice fly from Kyle Hann, but Michigan answered with four runs in the eighth as redshirt freshman Zach Johnson (Grandville, Mich./Grandville) singled home classmate John DiLaura (Clinton Twp., Mich./Warren DeLaSalle) and Crank belted a three-run home run to left to give the Wolverines an 11-1 lead.
Krantz hit his second home run of the game in the ninth and Lakatos followed with a blast to make it 13-1. Johnson then doubled home DiLaura and Stephens connected on a two-run single to right, making it 16-1 after nine innings.
Michigan went on to score eight runs in the final three innings, as homers from Stephens and Lorenz highlighted the action.
Stephens drove in seven runs, while Krantz was 4-for-6 with four runs batted in and four runs scored. Lorenz and Lakatos had three hits apiece, with Lorenz scoring six runs.
The Michigan pitching staff struck out 14 Blue Jays as senior Kolby Wood (Eau Claire, Mich./Berrien Springs) had four punchouts in three innings of work. Redshirt sophomore Bobby Brosnahan (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) struck out a pair in his start, while Mills struck out the side in the 14th frame.
Michigan's defense also gave the pitchers a lift, as the Wolverines turned four double plays and made just one error on the night.
The Maize and Blue returns to the field Sunday, Oct. 10, for the annual Maize and Blue game. The game starts at 11 a.m. and admission is free at the Wilpon Baseball Complex.
