ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team knocked off No. 21-ranked Purdue, 134.5-108.5, Sunday evening (Jan. 16) at Canham Natatorium.
Sophomore Miguel Ortiz (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) led the Wolverines effort, claiming both sprint races in the 50-yard freestyle (20.65) and 100-yard freestyle (45.41).
Michigan found itself chasing Purdue after four events, but three straight podium sweeps gave the Maize and Blue an 18-point lead just past the midway point of the meet. Ortiz led a triumvirate of Wolverines in the 50-yard freestyle, followed by senior Neal Kennedy (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) pacing a sweep in the 200-yard individual medley (1:49.93) and junior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) doing the same in the 200-yard butterfly (1:46.52).
Following Ortiz's win in the 100-yard freestyle, sophomore Connor McCarroll (Portland, Ore./Jesuit) led a Wolverine threesome in the 200-yard backstroke (1:49.42). Purdue pulled back to within 21 points heading into the final event, but a first-place finish in the 200-yard freestyle relay sealed the meet's outcome.
U-M will take a week off before hosting No. 8-ranked Ohio State, Penn State and Northwestern on Jan. 28-29 inside Canham Natatorium. Action will begin at 5 p.m on Friday (Jan. 28) and at 11 a.m. on Saturday (Jan. 29).
