DETROIT, Mich. -- The University of Michigan ice hockey team (No. 6 USA Today/No. 6 USCHO) lost, 2-1, to Michigan State on Saturday (Jan. 29) at Joe Louis Arena. The setback ended U-M's five-game winning streak and concluded the regular-season series against the Spartans at an even 2-2 record. Senior center Louie Caporusso (Woodbridge, Ontario) was the lone scorer for Michigan, which never led in the game.
After Michigan State scored the go-ahead goal at 12:26 of the third period, Michigan had two great chances to tie the game. At 14:50, sophomore right wing Kevin Lynch (Grosse Pointe, Mich.) attempted a penalty shot that was stopped by goalie Will Yanakeff. Shortly after, junior defenseman Greg Pateryn (Sterling Heights, Mich.) fired a shot from the center point that hit the left post.
Michigan State's Joey Shean scored the game-winning goal at 12:26 on a rebound from the right side. Senior goalie Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) stopped an initial point shot, but the puck bounced to Shean, who was uncovered and slid the puck in.
Scoreless through the first 39 minutes of the game, both teams scored in the final minute of the second period. MSU's Jake Chelios tallied on a power-play rebound from point-blank range at 19:07. Thirty-seven seconds later at 19:44, U-M responded to tie the game. Caporusso corralled a loose puck at the right edge of the MSU crease, cut across the front of the net and tucked the puck beyond the outstretched leg of Yanakeff.
Hunwick stopped 28 shots, including 22 through the first two periods. Yanakeff made 34 stops.
The Wolverines hit the road next weekend (Fri-Sat., Feb. 4-5) for a two-game series against the Miami RedHawks. The Friday contest will be televised by CBS College Sports Network and begin at 7:35 p.m. The finale on Saturday will be shown on FS Detroit and start at 5:05 p.m.
