SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico -- The No. 15-ranked University of Michigan women's swimming and diving team opened the New Year in style, winning the Copa Coqui meet for the second year in a row on Sunday (Jan. 2). The Wolverines scored 112 points as a team and won all eight races. Senior Natasha Moodie (Miramar, Fla./Miramar) was named the meet's Most Valuable Swimmer after winning the 50- and 100-meter freestyles.
The Wolverines used the meet as a finale of their winter break training trip, training outside for more than a week. The meet was contested in long-course meters, as opposed to collegiate meets, which are in short-course yards.
In total, three Wolverines set new meet records -- junior Caitlin Dauw (St. Charles, Ill./St. Charles East) in the 100-meter butterfly (1:02.15), sophomore Adrienne Bicek (Downers Grove, Ill./Downers Grove North) in the 200-meter individual medley (2:25.99) and freshman Angela Chokran (South Elgin, Ill./St. Charles North) in the 100-meter breaststroke (1:13.92).
Other event winners were junior Liz Johnson (Milford, Mich./Milford) in the 100-meter backstroke (1:07.11), as well as the 200-meter medley relay team of Moodie, Dauw, sophomore Mattie Kukors (Auburn, Wash./Mountainview) and freshman Nikki Hubbard (Granger, Ind./Penn) and the 500-yard freestyle relay team.
Michigan's road swing continues this Saturday (Jan. 8), as it travels to Bloomington, Ind., looking for its second win of the season over the No. 14-ranked Indiana Hoosiers in a Big Ten dual meet. The meet will be split into two sessions, beginning at 11 a.m. and 6:30 p.m.
