
Wolverines' Big Ten Streak Snapped at No. 14 Indiana

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- The No. 8-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team fell in its Big Ten opener, 163-137, at No. 14-ranked Indiana on Saturday (Jan. 8) inside the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The Wolverines claimed five individual victories and won the 200-yard medley relay in their first conference loss since the 2006-07 season.
Senior Neal Kennedy (Chanhassen, Minn./Chaska) led the way for the Wolverines with victories in the 100-yard breaststroke and the 200-yard individual medley while swimming the anchor leg of U-M's winning relay. Kennedy posted an NCAA 'B' standard of 1:48.85 in the individual medley and was followed by freshman Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton), who finished second on a consideration time of 1:49.00. Whitaker collected a victory of his own, touching the wall first in the 200-yard butterfly.
Sophomore Sean Fletcher (Vienna, Va./James Madison) and junior Dan Madwed (Stamford, Conn./Towson) both touched the wall in 49.26 in the 100-yard butterfly, splitting the first- and second-place points. Senior Jared Miller (Liberty Township, Ohio/Lakota East) posted a time of 2:02.05 to pace the field in the 200-yard breaststroke.
A busy weekend awaits the Wolverines as they take part in three events beginning with the SMU Invitational on Friday and Saturday (Jan. 14-15) in Dallas, Texas. The remaining swimmers and the full complement of divers will host Eastern Michigan on Saturday (Jan. 15) at noon, before the entire Maize and Blue squad reunites for a Big Ten clash with Purdue on Sunday (Jan. 16) at 5 p.m. inside Canham Natatorium.

The Wolverines had their Big Ten winning streak snapped at 20 dual meets. The streak dated back to Jan. 27, 2007.
Michigan suffered its first loss in the Big Ten under third-year head coach Mike Bottom. The Maize and Blue are now 11-1 under Bottom in conference dual meets.
Sophomore Miguel Ortiz swam a career-best 20.22 in the 50-yard freestyle. His runner-up finish met the NCAA consideration standard and edged his previous best of 20.24 set at the Wolverine Last Chance meet on March 7, 2010.
