The Wolverines jumped out to a 1-0 lead when senior Greg Pateryn (Sterling Heights, Mich.) put home a power-play goal a little more than six minutes into the game. The goal was assisted by junior Chris Brown (Flower Mound, Texas)and sophomore Mac Bennett (Narragansett, R.I.).

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "Overall, our thoughts are that we did a lot of good things in this game, but our execution was not as good as it needs to be and then you end up falling behind with some sloppy defensive play or sloppy turnovers and that might have been the difference in the game. Our team has to take something out of that game and they have to take a step to the next game."
On the quick start ... "We carried the play in the first half of the game and we did not put our chances in and we kept them in the game and sure enough, they started to carry the play and they took advantage of our turnovers in the second period and they got back in the game and it was anyone's game in the third."
On the takeaway points from tonight's game ... "I think it will take a while, I'm sure some of them are going to take some good things out of this game and some of them are going to take things and say 'boy, I've got to do better than this,' and that's what it's all about in Division I college hockey. It's good hockey. And it's not just our young players, our older players have to understand that summer hockey is over and this is the real deal and we need to pick it up."
U-M Senior Forward Luke Glendening
On what the team learned from tonight ... "I think we learned a lot about our team. I think we learned a lot about what we need to work on. We definitely need to be more sound defensively, and we also need to bury our chances offensively. I do not know how many shots we had, but it was a lot and we had two goals and that's not enough. I think we're okay, obviously no one likes to lose, but our team will be okay."
On converting shots into goals ... "I think that is just a part that comes at the beginning of the season. Scoring is a part that is the last thing to come. You can work on defense, that's hard work, and that is something that you want to instill in your team as a value. I think that scoring is going to come, it just takes a little bit longer as you're on the ice more and feel more comfortable."
On the power-play unit ... "We moved the puck around pretty good, we got a lot of shots and (Greg) Pateryn's goal was a good power-play goal. Like I said, that is something that will come, and we have not had a lot of time to work on it. Coaches are only allowed on the ice two hours a week, so that is a total of six probably since our season started, so it has not been that many that we've been on the ice with our coach. We'll keep working on it and we'll come back."
U-M Fifth-year Senior Goaltender Shawn Hunwick
On what the team learned from tonight ... "We had a lot of guys in there playing their first game, eight freshmen played, and it was only against a Canadian team, an exhibition game, but they got a little taste of Yost and a little taste of what adversity is going to be. We're not just going to come in here and throw our sticks out there because we are Michigan and going to win. We have to come every night and play hard. I think after the first period we had big shot advantage, and some of the guys might have thought we were going to run over them all night. In the second period they came out and got two quick ones and we were in a dog fight after that, and we could not get back up."
