ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 14th-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team used goals from freshman Aline Fobe (Aartsellar, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lourdes) and sophomore Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School) and four saves from fifth-year senior Christi Barwick (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines) to blank No. 12 Iowa, 2-0, on Saturday morning (Oct. 1) at Ocker Field. Michigan recorded its fourth shutout of the year in its Big Ten home opener.

Aline Fobe
Michigan had seven penalty corners in the first 35 minutes, including a string of five in a row that eventually led to the first goal. Senior Bryn Bain (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) took the pass from fifth-year senior Eileen Brandes (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) and sent it to Fobe, whose shot from the top of the circle beat Iowa keeper Kathleen McGraw to the left to give the Wolverines the 1-0 lead. It was Fobe's second goal of the season.
Michigan added insurance in the 60th minute. Freshman Axelle Wouters (Antwerp, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe Antwerp) tipped a pass from sophomore Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) to Mack, who beat McGraw left to give U-M the two-goal advantage.
Barwick recorded her second shutout of the season and fourth of her career. McGraw made six saves for the Hawkeyes.
Michigan enjoyed an 11-5 shot advantage and an 8-3 lead on penalty corners. Mack and Bain led Michigan with three shots apiece.
The Maize and Blue will host its annual alumnae game this Sunday (Oct. 2) at 10 a.m., and then return to Big Ten play this Friday (Oct. 7) at Northwestern. Game time in Evanston, Ill., is 3 p.m. CDT.
