SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team claimed a decisive sweep to cap its opening weekend of the 2011-12 season, downing Notre Dame (174-119), Oakland (190-97) and Texas Christian (178-115) on Saturday afternoon (Oct. 15) at the Rolfs Aquatic Center. The Wolverines won 10 total events, using seven different athletes, including both relays and one diving event.
Sophomores Connor Jaeger (Rumson, N.J./Rumson Fair Haven HS) and Kyle Whitaker (Chesterton, Ind./Chesterton HS) headlined the Michigan effort with a pair of individual titles apiece. Jaeger won the 500-yard and 1000-yard freestyles, posting a career-best 9:10.63 in the latter event -- nearly a 16-second improvement on his previous best time. He just missed NCAA consideration time with a 4:26.77 showing in the 500-yard race.
Michigan went 1-2 in the 200-yard butterfly, with Whitaker beating out sophomore teammate John Wojciechowski (Scottsdale, Ariz./Phoenix Brophy Prep) for the top spot with a time of 1:50.17. The U-M duo shared first place in the 200-yard individual medley, touching the wall together in 1:52.26. The Wolverines similarly claimed the top two spots in the 50-yard freestyle, with junior Evan Gregg (Blacksburg, Va./Blacksburg HS) earning the victory in 20.48 -- just .19 seconds off NCAA consideration time.
Sophomore Ryutaro Kamiya (Tokyo, Japan/St. Mary's International) and junior Sean Fletcher (Vienna, Va./James Madison HS) rounded out Michigan's individual winners in the pool, claiming the 200-yard backstroke and the 100-yard butterfly, respectively. Kamiya posted a time of 1:48.95, while Fletcher finished in 49.76.
Sophomore Jack Lee (North Egremont, Mass./Berkshire School) posted a career-best score of 328.35 to win the three-meter diving title. Lee's previous best with 310.30.
The Wolverines will open the home portion of their schedule next Saturday (Oct. 22), hosting Toronto, Club Wolverine Elite and the Canadian National Training Center team at 4 p.m. at Canham Natatorium.
