ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The 18th-ranked Indiana Hoosiers scored four second-half goals to defeat the University of Michigan men's soccer team, 4-1, on Saturday evening (Oct. 15) at the U-M Soccer Stadium. The Wolverines (4-10-1, 1-3 Big Ten) were unable to hold on to a 1-0 halftime lead.

The game-time temperature was 52 degrees with winds blowing across the field from west to east. Wind gusts reached between 20 and 30 miles per hour throughout the contest.
An apparent header goal by Indiana's Kerel Bradford was nullified on an offside penalty in the 20th minute of action. Michigan took advantage for the game's first goal 98 seconds later, as freshman midfielder Tyler Arnone (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville HS) connected on a shot from 20 yards out that beat IU goalkeeper Luis Soffner to the lower left at 22:02. The goal was Arnone's second of the season and came on assists from freshman forward Matthew Rickard (Exeter, Devonshire/Clyst Vale CC) and junior defender Kofi Opare (Niagara Falls, Ontario/St. Paul HS).
In the opening 45 minutes, the Wolverines had three shots on goal compared to just one for the Hoosiers; both teams had five total shots. Indiana collected the lone corner kick with less than 30 seconds remaining in the half.
Michigan had two shots on goal in the first two minutes of the second half, but Soffner made the saves. Indiana's Chris Estridge pushed one into the goal in the 48th minute but was called offside, negating another goal.
Indiana tied the score, 1-1, when Eriq Zavaleta scored an empty-net goal at 55:35. The goal came after a missed tackle by redshirt freshman goalkeeper Adam Grinwis (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills HS) outside the 18 on a run by Alec Purdie. The ball deflected to an open Eriq Zavaleta in the middle, where he pushed it into the left side of the open goal.
The Hoosiers grabbed the lead seven minutes later as Purdie scored his seventh goal of the season, beating Grinwis with the left foot from 14 yards out to the low left at 62:58.
Indiana extended its lead to 3-1 on a header goal by Nikita Kotlov from point-blank range at 77:03. The Hoosiers then tallied their fourth of the half as Zavaleta chipped the ball over Grinwis and into the net at 85:15.
U-M will host fifth-ranked Akron on Tuesday evening (Oct. 18) at the U-M Soccer Stadium. The game between the Wolverines and Zips will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network starting at 7:30 p.m.
