U-M hit just .173 for the match, compared to .276 for Michigan State. Sophomore Lexi Erwin (Spring, Texas/Woodlands College Park) put down 15 kills to go with nine digs and two service aces, with fellow outside hitter senior Alex Hunt (Granger, Ind./South Bend St. Joseph) going for 13 kills and nine digs. Senior Courtney Fletcher (Johns Creek, Ga./Northview) rounded out the Wolverines in double figures with 10 kills. Freshman setter Lexi Dannemiller (West Chester, Ohio/Lakota West) handed out 46 assists and senior libero Sloane Donhoff (Louisville, Ky./Assumption) led the defense with 13 digs.
Tied at 12-12 in the first frame, MSU went on a 9-1 run to grab a 21-13 advantage and put the set out of reach for Michigan en route to the 25-16 win. U-M had 10 attack errors and five service errors in the set, resulting in 15 of MSU's 25 points.
An Erwin kill with the score knotted at 13-13 in the second set gave Michigan a 14-13 advantage and the Maize and Blue held the lead the rest of the way in a 25-23 triumph. The Wolverines took set point at 24-21, but MSU scored two consecutive points on a service error and attack error to force a U-M timeout. Out of the break, Hunt found the floor on the outside for the final point of the set, sending the teams to the break tied at 1-1.
MSU went on a three-point spurt with the third set tied at 8-8, staking an 11-8 lead. The Spartan advantage swelled to six at 22-16, before U-M ripped off five consecutive points, four on the serve of senior Michelle McMahon (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Northern), who came in for Hunt. The run stalled when McMahon's serve found the net as MSU stayed on top, 23-21. The Spartans scored the final two points of the set, grabbing the 25-21 win.
After falling behind 18-15 in the fourth frame, a Spartan service error ignited a 5-0 Michigan run, including two service aces from Erwin, as the Wolverines grabbed a 20-18 lead. Michigan State then responded with five consecutive points to regain a 23-20 lead. The teams traded points before MSU took match point at 24-21. U-M staved off two points on kills from Hunt and Erwin, but the Spartans found the floor on the next point for the 25-23 win.
The Wolverines wrap up their four-match road swing on Saturday (Oct. 22) at No. 9-ranked Penn State. The match will start at 7 p.m. and stream live on ESPN3.com.
