LEXINGTON, Ky. -- With a trio Wolverines finishing among the top 25, the University of Michigan women's golf team closed fourth today (Sunday, Oct. 2) at the 2011 Bettie Lou Evans Fall Invitational at the University Club. U-M, which posted its second straight top-five team finish of the fall, had team tallies of 322, 310 and 312 (944).
With temperatures in the 50s and 20 mile-per-hour winds during Friday's first round (Sept. 30), scores across the board were up as U-M posted a 322 to sit tied for sixth after 18 holes. Despite a second day of chilly and windy conditions, the Maize and Blue used a career-best one-over 73 from freshman Devon Compton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Stoney Creek HS) and a one-over 73 from sophomore Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood HS) to post a 310 team total in Saturday's second round (Oct. 1) and move into third after 36 holes.
A three-over 75 from sophomore Yugene Lee (Athens, Ga./Oconee County HS) in the final round paced the Wolverines as they closed with a 312 to drop one position and close fourth.
Shimel led U-M as she tied for 17th at 236 (83-73-80), while Lee and senior Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) each tied for 21st at 237. Lee closed with tallies of 78, 84 and 75, while Bauer carded rounds of 79, 80 and 78. After opening with a 92, Compton recovered with rounds of 73 and 81 to tie for 50th at 246. Rounding out the Wolverine scoring was freshman Lauren Grogan (Columbus, Ohio/Bishop Watterson HS), who tied for 67th at 250 (82-89-79), and junior Caramia Sitompul (Jakarta, Indonesia/Bradenton Prep [Fla.]), who played as an individual and tied for 54th at 247 (81-86-80).
U-M will continue its fall season, traveling to French Lick, Ind., Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 10-11, for the 2011 Lady Northern Invitational, which will be a preview for the site of the 2012 Big Ten Championships -- the French Lick Resort. The 54-hole event will be played on the Donald Ross Course at the resort.

Michigan has back-to-back top-five finishes for the first time since the 2008-09 fall season. In fact, during the fall of 2008, U-M had three straight top-five finishes -- Windy City Collegiate (third), Lady Northern Invitational (fifth) and the Landfall Tradition (tie-third).
Devon Compton's second-round one-over 73 is a career-best round. She topped the 74 she posted in the second round in her career opening event -- the Mary Fossum Invitational.

Michigan Head Coach Cheryl Stacy
On the weekend in Kentucky ... "This weekend, the golf course played tough and long. Both Friday and Saturday it was really windy, so that made conditions pretty brutal. However, we were able to fight through it, especially in the second round. We really came back and that was great to see. I was very pleased with Alyssa's (Shimel) and Devon's (Compton) 73s. Even today, to see Yugene (Lee) bounce back with a 75 was really impressive considering the way she started the event. Overall, we were in position to stay in the top three, but we just did not close the way we should -- something we will work on. We were hoping to play just a little bit better, however, we did have a lot of positives and we got a win over Illinois, who is ranked eighth in the country. We just need to continue to put the work in and I know we will continue to get better. I am excited to get to the Lady Northern. It will be a good test for us as well as a great opportunity to see the course that will host Big Ten's."
