CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The seventh-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team scored three goals in regulation play and received 11 saves from fifth-year senior Christi Barwick (San Diego, Calif./Torrey Pines), but a penalty-stroke goal from Marta Malmberg in the 10th minute of double overtime gave No. 2 North Carolina a 4-3 win over the Wolverines Sunday afternoon (Oct. 23) at Francis E. Henry Stadium.

Bryn Bain
Michigan had a shot apiece in each overtime frame and a penalty corner at the end of the first overtime, but it was the Tar Heels who scored the game-winner in the second extra period. Katie Ardrey's shot was saved by freshman Aline Fobe (Aartsellar, Belgium/Onze Lieve Vrouwe van Lourdes), but the Tar Heels were awarded a penalty stroke, which Malmberg coverted to give North Carolina its 17th win of the season.
The Wolverines and Tar Heels each tallied a goal in the first half. Ardrey scored on a deflection from Elizabeth Stephens' shot in the 27th minute. Then right before the half, Michigan had three straight penalty corners. On the third corner, shots from senior Bryn Bain (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) and sophomore Michelle Roberts (Pocomoke, Md./Pocomoke) were blocked, but senior Jess Allen (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional) converted on the third attempt for her first goal of the season.
Kelsey Kolojejchick scored for UNC in the 40th minute, but Michigan scored twice less than six minutes apart to take the lead. At 53:51, Bain scored on a direct corner from Fobe and sophomore/freshman Leslie Smith (Hummelstown, Pa./Hershey) to tie the game at two. Freshman Emy Guttman (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) gave the Maize and Blue a 3-2 lead at 59:40 on a deflection from Bain.
With less than five minutes remaining in regulation, North Carolina tied the game as Jaclyn Gaudioso Radvany scored from the right side of the circle on an assist from Kolojejchick at 65:24.
Barwick set a career high with the 11 saves, while Fobe and sophomore Mallory Albini (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual) each had a defensive save. UNC's lone stop came on a defensive save from Caitlin Van Sickle on Bain's shot in the 53rd minute.
North Carolina held a 24-10 shot advantage, while each team had eight penalty corners.
Michigan returns home to end the regular season next weekend. The Maize and Blue will go for an outright Big Ten regular-season championship against Indiana at 4 p.m. Friday (Oct. 28) at Ocker Field.
