ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision to No. 14 Penn State on Sunday (Oct. 23) to close out its home schedule at U-M Soccer Stadium.

Clare Stachel
Penn State was the aggressor throughout most of the first half. In the 20th minute, Penn State midfielder Emily Hurd had the first legitimate scoring chance, putting a shot past senior/junior goalkeeper Haley Kopmeyer (Troy, Mich./Lahser) but having it bounce off the post. The Nittany Lions broke through in the 22nd minute, however, on a goal from Taylor Schram to take a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines had a chance to answer in the 25th minute. Freshman Chloe Sosenko (South Lyon, Mich./Brighton) played a wonderful through-ball to a sprinting Clare Stachel (Grand Rapids, Mich./Forest Hills Central), who managed to get in behind the Penn State defense, but her shot went just wide right of the net.
Penn State forward Maya Hayes added to Penn State's lead in the final minute of the half. Nittany Lions forward Ali Schaefer put a shot on the net that was saved by Kopmeyer, but Hayes corralled the rebound and put it into the net for a 2-0 lead. She added another goal in the 60th minute that made the score 3-0, and Schaefer capped the scoring in the 80th minute.
Kopmeyer made five saves in net, including a save on a penalty kick in the final minutes, to push her season total to 105.
Michigan wraps up the regular season on Saturday (Oct. 29) with a road game at Illinois. The game will begin at 6 p.m. CDT in Champaign, Ill.
