Michigan Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "I didn't think it was a 4-0 game. I thought they were always in the game. The goals were huge, every goal is huge in this game, and the goal posts were obviously in our favor tonight. Our goalie played really well, I think they're a better team than they showed tonight, and the puck didn't go in for them but it went in for us. So, it's a good weekend for us, those were games. We had to have to establish ourselves at home and get back in the conference race and I thought we did that. Penalty killing got better, I think we took a step forward this weekend."
On what he learned from the weekend ... "I learned that if we are really focused and dialed in we can play well defensively and then if we lose that focus we get on the wrong side of the puck and we can play like a heart-attack type of game. And we did a little bit of that at times tonight. You know, we got a 4-0 lead and players start to maybe take chances or whatever and we just don't want that. We want to take pride in our goals against, and we'll score goals by playing good, honest, Michigan hockey."
On freshman contribution ... "They're doing well, they're getting good experience. It's a little bit of a stretch sometimes, putting them in situations, but they're handling it well."
On how the team is doing so early in the season ... "Last year we had proven scorers trying to score that couldn't score, and this year we've got unproven scorers that are scoring. So I think it's good that they're trying to prove that they can score, but particularly the young freshmen. Guptill has come in and scored, and Zach Hyman is playing just as well as any of them -- and he might only have one goal but he is contributing. And we mentioned Di Giuseppe is playing well, and so on. All the freshmen are helping our team."
U-M Junior Forward Chris Brown
On what he learned about his team ... "When we take the underdog roll and especially when we play in our own building, we can do anything. We have so much power and we have so much depth. Our goalie is going to play and stand on his head every night. We're putting the right guys with the right guys and we're getting our chances. One thing we need to do is play a little better on defense. We can't give them that many chances. But we're putting in ours right now, so we're winning games."
On being considered the underdog ... "Ferris just swept Miami last week. Miami has kind of been our arch nemesis for the past few years, so to have them do that, it's kind of a shell shock. We needed to step up and play, and we did that this weekend."
On improved offensive balance ... "Yes and no. When you look at the senior class from last year, they were in the same position our freshmen are in this year. There were nine or 12 of them. They are filling in for what we lost. That's what Michigan does. We don't lose, we just reload. We're looking forward to that."
On the team's relaxed personality ... "I think we're having fun. It's a loose, fun, just go out and play. I think for three and half hours we're focused but other than that we're having a great time with each other and that's the best part about being on this team."
U-M Fifth-Year Senior Goaltender Shawn Hunwick
On the weekend ... "It's nice to get home and play a pretty big series at home. It's been a while since we did. Obviously St. Lawrence and the others are good teams. It's nice to play a CCHA foe here at Yost, and it was a good result. Everyone talked about their defense coming into this series, and we were able to get nine goals against them."
On what he learned about this team ... "When we put our mind to it and score goals, we can play with anybody. They had only given up five goals coming in. It was a huge to get confidence offensively and it was huge to only give up two goals against."
On the improved penalty kill ... "I think if you look at the plays last night, it was just two broken plays. On the first one, Billins just beat the guy 1-on-1, that's not really a penalty killing issue. That could've happened 5-on-5. On the second one last night, it was a good passing play; it only took 10 seconds. We did a good job tonight. We probably had to kill a little more than we did last night, but the guys really stepped up."
On the improved consistency from the defense ... "We gave up 24 or 25 shots, but not too many tough saves. The defense played really well. They kept the puck to the outside and limited turnovers, picking up all the rebounds that I gave up. The defense played great tonight."
