Michigan and Alaska met for the 53rd all-time matchup between the teams, as the Wolverines record improved to 42-10-1 versus the Nanooks. Michigan owns a 18-6-0 record in Fairbanks.
Freshman Alex Guptill scored the overtime goal for the Wolverines, his eighth tally of the season and his second game winner. Guptill is now tied with Phil Di Giuseppe for the team lead in goals.
Tonight was the first scoreless contest after 60 minutes since Dec. 29, 2007, when Michigan defeated Michigan Tech in double overtime for the GLI championship.
The Wolverines took 42 shots on goals tonight. It was the third time this season that Michigan has taken more than 40 shots in a game.
Michigan took 18 shots in the first period, the second most they have taken in a period this year (23 in the third vs. Bentley on Oct. 7).
Tonight marked the first time this season that both teams were scoreless through two periods of play.
Goaltender Shawn Hunwick turned aside 25 shots for his second shutout of the season and seventh of his career.
