ARLINGTON, Texas -- Former University of Michigan star cornerback Charles Woodson helped the Green Bay Packers claim the Vince Lombardi Trophy as Super Bowl XLV champions with a 31-25 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday (Feb. 6) at Cowboys Stadium. Woodson (1995-97) had two solo stops and one assisted tackle before leaving the game with a shoulder injury just prior to the conclusion of the first half.
It was the first Super Bowl title for Woodson in his 13-year NFL career and the Packers' fourth Vince Lombardi Trophy. Woodson made his only previous appearance in the championship game as a member of the Oakland Raiders in Super Bowl XXXVII (loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers).
Woodson has earned seven trips to the Pro Bowl in his 13 seasons. During his collegiate days, Woodson helped lead the Wolverines to the 1997 national championship as he became the first primarily defensive player to win the Heisman Trophy.
In addition to Woodson, former Wolverine defensive lineman Mike Trgovac (1977-80) is Green Bay's defensive line coach.
The Steelers roster was represented by four former Wolverines: starting outside linebacker LaMarr Woodley (2003-06), linebacker Larry Foote (1998-2001), safety Ryan Mundy (2003-06) and assistant offensive line coach Harold Goodwin (2002-05). Woodley contributed three solo tackles and one sack in the contest.
