PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan men's basketball sophomore Darius Morris (Los Angeles, Calif./Windward) and freshman Tim Hardaway Jr. (Miami, Fla./Palmetto Senior) were honored Monday (March 7) with all-conference accolades. Morris was named to the All-Big Ten third team (coaches and media), while Hardaway was named to the all-freshmen team (coaches) and was an All-Big Ten honorable mention (media, coaches). Junior Stu Douglass (Carmel, Ind./Carmel HS) was named as U-M's Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree.
Morris has started 30 of Michigan's 31 games this season at point guard and put up career numbers, including a team-leading 15.2 points per game -- shooting 49.3 percent from the floor -- and 6.8 assists per game. He also averages 4.0 rebounds per contest. He finished the Big Ten regular season as the conference leader in assists (6.77) and ranks fifth nationally in assists per game. Morris' 210 assists are third-most in a single season by a Wolverine, trailing only Gary Grant (234, 1987-88) and Rumeal Robinson (233, 1988-89).
In addition, Morris holds Michigan's all-time record for most assists in a single season by a sophomore, passing Grant (1985-86). Morris has seven games with 10-plus assists, also a school record, and has recorded six double-doubles, joining Grant and Manny Harris (2008-10) as the only Wolverines to record a triple-double, accomplishing the feat with 12 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds against Iowa on Jan. 30.
Hardaway has started all 31 games for the Wolverines this season, averaging 13.8 points, 3.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists per game. He was named the Big Ten Freshman of the Week award four times (Dec. 27, Feb. 14, Feb. 21, Feb. 28) -- the only non-Ohio State player to win the honor -- and is second among all Big Ten freshmen in scoring, behind only Ohio State's Jared Sullinger.
Hardaway scored in double figures in 23 games -- 12 straight and in 16 of last 17 games -- including going for 30 points in an overtime win at Iowa on Feb. 19 to become the first freshman since Daniel Horton (2003-06) to net 30 points or more during a game.
Michigan opens up play at the 2011 Big Ten Tournament as the conference's No. 4 seed on Friday (March 11) at the Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, Ind. U-M will face No. 5 seed Illinois (19-12, 9-9 Big Ten), with tipoff scheduled for around 2:30 p.m. on ESPN.
