
Thunderstorms Halt Second Round of Big Ten Championships

GLENCOE, Ill. -- Thunderstorms rolled through the Lake Shore Country Club today (Friday, April 22), halting play during the second round of the 2011 Big Ten Championships with the University of Michigan women's golf team in the eighth position after posting a 311 team total in the first round.
Michigan (311-308/619), Purdue (303-296/599), Michigan State (306-290/596) and Illinois (314-313/627) were the only four teams to complete the second round before the weather halted play.
With the remainder of the field having up to five holes remaining, the rest of the second round will commence on Saturday (April 23) at 9 a.m. CDT. Following the second round, the teams will be reseeded by results for the third round, which is scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. CDT. The last group will go off at 1:09 p.m. CDT.
As rain fell throughout the first round, the Wolverines opened the conference tournament with a 311 team total. Freshman Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) carded a 75, putting her tied for ninth to lead the Wolverines. Junior Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) was a shot behind and tied for 11th after her opening 76, while senior Min Yean Tan (Penang Island, Malaysia/Hills International College [Australia]) fired a 78 to sit tied for 24th.
Freshman Yugene Lee (Athens, Ga./Oconee County) opened her first conference tournament with an 82 (tie for 53rd) and senior Louisa Shu (West Bloomfield, Mich./Birmingham Seaholm) shot an 83 (tie for 56th), while sophomore Caramia Sitompul (Jakarta, Indonesia/Bradenton Prep Academy [Bradenton, Fla.]) carded an 86 (tie for 60th).
As the rain stopped midday, Michigan got through its second 18 holes to tally a 308 team total. Rebounding from their opening-round totals, Shu posted a 76 and Sitompul fired a 77 in the second round to help lead the Wolverines. Shimel added a 77, Tan and Lee had 78s and Bauer closed with a 79 to help the Wolverines to a 619 36-hole score.

Alyssa Shimel and Yugene Lee are playing in their first Big Ten Championships.
Min Yean Tan extended her consecutive tournament streak at U-M, starting her 46th career tournament. She has yet to miss a tournament in her four-year career.
