SOUTH BEND, Ind. -- After enduring a near two-and-a-half hour delay due to thunderstorms, the University of Michigan women's golf team posted a 315 final round score today (Saturday, May 7) to finish 18th with a 938 team total at the 2011 NCAA Central Regional held on Notre Dame's Warren Golf Course. By virtue of the Wolverines' finish, they did not advance to the NCAA Finals, ending their season.
The Wolverines open the regional with a 316 and were in a tie for 20th after day one ended on Thursday (May 5). U-M then carded a 307 to move up three spots after round two on Friday (May 6). Junior Meagan Bauer (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc) fired her best round of the tournament (three-over 75) in round one and freshman Alyssa Shimel (Pemberville, Ohio/Eastwood) equaled the score in the second round.
After playing nearly 12 holes, the Wolverines were called off the course today but returned to finish the round and the regional. Sophomore Caramia Sitompul (Jakarta, Indonesia/Bradenton Prep Academy [Bradenton, Fla.]) paced U-M on the final day, producing her best round of the event, a four-over 76.
Bauer and Shimel were the top Wolverines individually, as they each finished at 233 in a tie for 63rd. After opening with the 75, Bauer posted back-to-back 79s to close her regional, while Shimel opened with an 80 but followed with rounds of 75 and 78.
Using her final-round 76, Sitompul finished tied for 85th at 238 (79-83-76), while senior Min Yean Tan (Penang Island, Malaysia/Hills International College [Australia]) tied for 105th at 243 (85-76-82) and freshman Yugene Lee (Athens, Ga./Oconee County) tied for 112th at 245 (82-77-86).
The eight teams advancing to the NCAA Championships include UCLA, LSU, Minnesota, Arkansas, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Stanford and Wake Forest. Tulane's Maribel Lopez Porras (par) defeated Chattanooga's Maria Juliana Loza (bogey) on first playoff hole (No. 10) to earn second individual qualifying spot. She will join Duke's Lindy Duncan as an individual qualifier for this year's NCAA Finals.
U-M closed the regular season with nine top-10 finishes, an eighth-place finish at the Big Ten Championships -- posting the fourth-lowest score in program history -- and made the ninth (team and individual) NCAA regional appearance (team and individual) in the last 11 seasons.

Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Cheryl Stacy
On the NCAA Central Regional ... "We were very pleased to make it to an NCAA regional and I thought we really competed. It was a great field and our young players gained valuable experience in the postseason. We had a tough first round that put us in a position where we needed to come back, but we were optimistic going into the last two days. We improved substantially with our second round and it really showed we can adjust after adversity. We were playing quite well today going into the back nine, but the two-hour rain delay stalled our momentum and we didn't finish as strongly as we would've liked. However, I am really proud of our girls for their hard work and attitudes this year. They have practiced very hard, competed every time out there and really learned so much this season. I know the experiences gained this season will only help us next year and in years to come."
