ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- University of Michigan women's rowing head coach Mark Rothstein announced two additions to his coaching staff on Friday (Aug. 12). U-M alumna Annie Hildebrand Knill has been named an assistant coach, while fellow U-M alumna Nellie Ruedig has been named a graduate assistant coach.
"After conducting a national search for an assistant coach, we found that the best coach for Michigan rowing was right here in Ann Arbor in Annie Hildebrand Knill," Rothstein said. "Annie has been an outstanding graduate assistant over the past three seasons at U-M. She possesses a great passion for rowing and communicates extremely well with our team. She is one of the best young coaches in our sport."
"I am excited to have Nellie join our program as a coach," said Rothstein. "She will bring a lot to our staff in a variety of capacities."
With the addition of Hildebrand Knill, Brett Sickler will be elevated to the role of lead assistant coach. Sickler will become the recruiting coordinator and oversee the novice program.
Hildebrand Knill has been Michigan's graduate assistant in charge of coaching the novice team since June 2008. In her three seasons, the first and second novice eights enjoyed tremendous success, accruing 50 wins against just four losses. U-M's first and second novice eights each won their respective Big Ten title in 2011. The first novice eight was the Big Ten runner-up in 2009 and 2010. She was also head coach of Ann Arbor Rowing Club's Youth Program in the summers of 2008-10. She has a level III coaching certification from USRowing.
Hildebrand Knill was a four-year letterwinner under Coach Rothstein from 2005-08. She was U-M's Novice of the Year in 2005 and competed at the NCAA Championships in 2005 and 2008. A native of Rochester, Mich., she also earned Academic All-Big Ten on two occasions. She married Cory Knill in July 2011.
Ruedig will assist in the coaching of the novice team. She was a two-year letterwinner at Michigan after beginning her rowing career in the novice program. She rowed in U-M's second varsity eight in 2010 and 2011, reaching the NCAA Championships in each campaign. She received Academic All-Big Ten recognition in 2010. Ruedig is from Concord, N.H.
