TOLEDO, Ohio -- After rain washed away the first 36 holes of the Inverness Intercollegiate, the University of Michigan men's golf team tallied a 301 in the tournament's only round today (Tuesday, Sept. 27) to tie for seventh in the 11-team field played at the Inverness Club.
Returning to the course of the 2009 NCAA Finals, heavy rains on Monday (Sept. 26) reduced the event to 18 holes. With a one-round shootout scheduled for today's final round, the Wolverines were led by senior Matt Thompson (Battle Creek, Mich./Lakeview HS) and junior Matt Alessi (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Birmingham Brother Rice) as they each shot 74 to tie for 17th.
Junior Miguel Echavarria (Medellin, Colombia/The Columbus School) tied for 32nd with a 76, while junior Rahul Bakshi (Chandigarh, India/St. John's HS) and junior Jack Schultz (Whitefish Bay, Wis./Whitefish Bay HS) each tied for 39th with tallies of 77. Playing as an individual, freshman Andrew Wong (Deerfield Beach, Fla./Pompano Beach HS) also tied for 39th with his score of 77.
The Wolverines have one day back in Ann Arbor before taking off to Durham, N.C., to compete in Duke's Rod Myers Invitational, Saturday and Sunday (Oct. 1-2). The 54-hole event will be played at the Duke Golf Club on campus.

N O T E S
Michigan played in an 18-hole tournament for the first time since 1993, when the Fripp Island Intercollegiate (March 11-12, 1993) was reduced to an 18-hole event due to weather.
Michigan returned to the Inverness Club for the first time since the program's semifinal finish at the 2009 NCAA Finals.
Q U O T E S
Michigan Head Coach Chris Whitten
On the Inverness Intercollegiate ... "We tried to go into it with the same mindset as we normal would. We tried to stress to the guys that every shot is important and the value of every shot is the same. So whether it is an 18-hole event, 36- or 54-, we should approach everything the same way and I thought that we did. I did not really feel it was an advantage or disadvantage for us with it being only 18 holes. Statistically, teams fair better the longer you play, but we can control only the things we can control. The course was a little wet, soft and slow, but it played the same for everybody. We were really just a little below average across the board and I do not think it is anything to overreact to. There are definitely things for us to clean up. We have a short turnaround, so it will feel good to get right back in competition and be able to work on some things that we noted from today."
