BLED, Slovenia -- Two University of Michigan women's rowing alumnae won silver medals at the 2011 World Rowing Championships (Sept. 1-2). Janine Hanson (2003-06) helped Team Canada's eight to a runner-up finish on Friday (Sept. 2), while Stesha Carle (2003-06) collected silver in the U.S. quadruple sculls on Thursday (Sept. 1).
Hanson's crew had the lead through the halfway point of the race, only to be overtaken by the United States, the World and Olympic champion. The U.S. crossed the line in 6:03.65, with Canada clocking in at 6:04.39.
Carle and the U.S quad fought back from fourth place to second place in a time of 6:19.90, just 1.53 seconds behind first-place Germany.
Thanks to their second-place finishes, Hanson and Carle helped their respective boats earn bids to the 2012 London Olympics.
Sarah Trowbridge (2003-06) is competing in the U.S. double sculls. Following a fifth-place finish the semifinals, Trowbridge is slotted for the B final on Saturday (Sept. 3). A top two-finish in the B final would sew up a bid for the U.S. double at the 2012 Olympics.
Carle, Hanson and Trowbridge each earned four letters as classmates from 2003-06. They helped the Wolverines to back-to-back Big Ten Conference championships in 2003 and '04, and three NCAA Championships appearances, including a third-place team showing in 2004.
