After a scoreless first 35 minutes, both offenses picked it up in the second half, which saw a combined 20 shots and nine penalty corners. Maryland struck first at 36:40 on a direct penalty corner goal from Jemma Buckley. Nine minutes later, Jill Wittmer scored on a backhanded shot to give the Terps a 2-0 advantage.
Michigan had back-to-back shots on goal in the 54th minute as Maryland goalkeeper Natalie Hunter saved strikes from sophomores Ainsley McCallister (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) and Rachael Mack (Bromsgrove, England/Bromsgrove School). Then at 63:08, Guttman put U-M on the board with a tip-in in the left corner of the cage, cutting Maryland's lead to one goal. Michigan had three shots in the final five minutes, but a Maryland defensive save and two blocked shots prevented the equalizer for the Wolverines.
Maryland held a 16-13 shot advantage and a 6-5 advantage on penalty corners. Junior/sophomore Haley Jones (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) stopped four shots for the Maize and Blue, while senior Hannah Dawson (Berlin, N.J./Eastern Regional) had two defensive saves. Hunter also had four saves in goal for the Terrapins.
U-M will return home to start a four-game homestand this Friday (Sept. 9) against Central Michigan. Game time is scheduled for 2 p.m. at Ocker Field.
