ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Central Collegiate Hockey Association announced today (Wednesday, Feb. 1) its Players of the Month for January, honoring fifth-year senior Shawn Hunwick (Sterling Heights, Mich.) and freshman Alex Guptill (Newmarket, Ontario) of the University of Michigan ice hockey team as the Gongshow® Goaltender of the Month and Rookie of the Month, respectively.
Hunwick appeared in all but one game for the Wolverines during the month of January, posting a 4-1-0 record, with one shutout, a 1.08 goals-against average and a .971 save percentage in five games. He posted victories in his first three appearances of the month, allowing just two goals total over that span. The 5-7, 166-pound goaltender made a career-high 46 saves, for his third shutout of the season, on Jan. 13 at Ohio State before leading Michigan to a 4-1 over the Buckeyes at the Frozen Diamond Faceoff on Jan. 15. Hunwick is currently tied for seventh in country in shutouts (three), ranks ninth in save percentage (.928) and is 12th in goals-against average (2.17). The Sterling Heights, Mich., native was named the CCHA Goaltender of the Week for the week ending Jan. 16, 2012.
Guptill posted a team-high 10 points (5g, 5a) in six games in January, helping the Wolverines to a 4-1-1 team mark. He notched points in all six games last month, setting a new career-long point streak. The 6-3, 189-pound forward earned four straight multiple-point games from Jan. 6 to Jan. 15 and has scored a goal in each of his last five contests. The Newmarket, Ontario, native leads all NCAA freshmen in goals (14) and ranks third nationally in points (26) among first-year players while leading Michigan overall in both categories. Guptill was honored as the CCHA Postgame® Offensive Player of the Week for the week ending Jan. 16, 2012.
Michigan currently resides in seventh place in the CCHA standings, just five points behind first-place Ferris State. The Wolverines return to action on Friday (Feb. 3) and Saturday (Feb. 4) when they host the Miami University RedHawks in a two-game set at Yost Ice Arena. Both games are scheduled for 7:35 p.m. start times. [ Tickets ]
