N O T E S
Matt Thompson's five-under 67 tied the team season best in relation to par, matching his 65 on the par-70 Evanston Golf Club in the final round of the Windon Memorial Classic (Oct. 17).
Thompson will enter the final round atop the individual standings, holding a one-stroke lead over Coastal Carolina's Sebastian Soderberg, who shot his second straight 68. Sepp Straka of Georgia, whose 66 gave him the first-day lead, shot 77 in the second round. Thompson is seeking his second career victory; he won the Windon Memorial Classic last fall (Oct. 16-17).
Thompson's 67 is his best score of the spring schedule (eight rounds), bettering the 67 he posted in yesterday's opening round. It is his second-best score of 2011-12 as well as his fifth round in the 60s and ninth under-par score this season.
This marks the second time this season Thompson has fired back-to-back scores under par in an event. He shot 71-70 (par 72) at the Bridgestone Intercollegiate (Oct. 29-30) to finish runner-up. He also had two under-par rounds on his way to victory at the Windon Memorial Classic (Oct. 16-17), shooting 69 in the first round and 65 in the third on a par-70 layout.
Thompson made an eagle, six birdies and three bogeys for his 67. Starting on No. 10, he was one over par after seven holes before making four consecutive birdies (17, 18, 1, 2) in the middle of the round. He eagled the par-5 sixth hole to get to -5, then bogeyed No. 7 and birdied No. 8.
First-year Wolverine Matt Alessi's even-par 72 is his best score of the season in relation to par. It also tied his season low he set with a two-over 72 in the first round of the Windon Memorial Classic (Oct. 16).
Alessi played the four par-5 holes in three under with three birdies and a par. It marked the second straight day that he birdied three of the four par-5s.
Alessi made four birdies (15, 17, 2, 6) and a bogey (No. 1) during a 10-hole stretch that got him to two under par before he finished with back-to-back bogeys.
Miguel Echavarria was three over par after five holes but played the remainder of the round in one under to shoot 74. He made five birdies (11, 16, 18, 6, 9), five bogeys and a double bogey.
Noori Hyun birdied three of the four par-5 holes.
This marks the first time Matt Felsenfeld has been in the starting lineup for a stroke-play event. His other start came earlier this spring in the Big Ten Match Play Championship (Feb. 10-11).
The Wolverines will be in the first groups off the No. 1 tee in Sunday's final round, playing with Western Carolina and Presbyterian with start times ranging from 8:00-8:40 a.m.
