
Wolverines to Face Middle Tennessee State in NCAA Opener

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team received an at-large bid to the 2012 NCAA Championships, the NCAA announced as part of its selection show on Tuesday (May 1). The Wolverines were selected to compete at the Mississippi regional, to be held at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in Oxford, Miss. Michigan will face Middle Tennessee State (19-7) in the first round at 9 a.m. CDT on Saturday, May 12.
With a win, Michigan would play the winner of Ole Miss (13-8), the tournament's No. 13 seed, and Binghamton (15-11) at 1 p.m. CDT on Sunday, May 13. The regional winner advances to the 16-team NCAA Championship field, which will compete for the national title May 17-22 at the University of Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga.
Michigan, ranked No. 22 in the most-recent ITA poll, is making its seventh consecutive trip to the NCAA Championships under head coach Bruce Berque and its 14th appearance since 1994. This season, the Wolverines earned a second-place finish in the Big Ten Conference with a 9-2 league record and boast a pair of All-Big Ten selections in junior Evan King (Chicago, Ill./Kaplan Prep), who was named the 2012 Big Ten Athlete of the Year, and freshman Alex Petrone (Staten Island, N.Y./Laurel Springs Prep).
Selections for the NCAA Individual Championships (singles and doubles) will be announced on Wednesday (May 2). The individual tournament will bring the top singles players and doubles teams from across the country to Palo Alto immediately following the conclusion of the NCAA Team Championships. The individual tournament, featuring 64 players (singles) or teams (doubles), will begin on Wednesday, May 23, and run through Monday, May 28.
